Could you provide a brief journey of how you arrived where you are today?
Before, joining Dar AlTakaful I worked for AIG, first as AIG Takaful-Enaya general manager in Bahrain and then as general manager for the Middle East, as well as an executive director on the board of directors of Enaya. In 2009 I was appointed as the managing director for AIG operations in Saudi Arabia (Arabian American Insurance) in addition to my responsibilities with AIG Takaful Middle East. Prior to working for AIG, I was the executive manager of Dubai Islamic Insurance & Reinsurance (AMAN), and also served in Norwich Union Insurance in Dubai. I also worked as an external adviser for the Chartered Insurance Institute, London, as well as a visiting lecturer on risk management and insurance at numerous universities and institutes in the Middle East. I was also an external consultant on insurance training for the Bahrain Institute for Banking and Finance.

The prospects for Takaful are tremendous. We are talking about 1.5 billion potential customers. The Takaful industry is providing products that meet consumers’ needs without them having to compromise their beliefs. However, we need to overcome several obstacles:
Where do you see the Islamic finance industry in, say, the next five years or so? One of the most important issues which need to be taken into consideration is staff training and development in Islamic finance to overcome the shortage of human resources in the Takaful industry. The Islamic finance industry scholars need also draw up clear plans to resolve the industry’s challenges on the regional and global levels in the coming years.
