Kenya’s Islamic banking system

Islamic finance in Kenya is still at an early stage of development, though the authorities are planning to develop and grow the sector. Around 11% of Kenya's population are Muslims, with the remainder predominantly Christians. Islamic banking assets had a market share of around 1% (Exhibit 1) of total banking system assets as of year-end 2021, a relatively low level.
