Impact of rising funding costs on margins will be greater than for conventional peers

The latest data from Malaysia's central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), and Indonesia's financial regulator, Otoritas Jasa Keuangan (OJK), shows that deposit rates for banks in the countries have increased. We expect deposit rates will continue to rise in 2023 because of competition for deposits among banks and a shift among depositors to higher-yield term deposits amid elevated interest rates.
